The Tourist – Song Trivia

The song had it’s live premiere when Thom and Jonny played it for a US radio station in Atlanta on july 21st 1995.

This song was originally recorded in one day for inclusion on the Bosnian Warchild benefit LP Help. Despite many other major British artists contributing to the album, this song was immediately recognised by the critics as the most outstanding track. Read the rest of this entry »

No Surprises – Song Trivia

he band tried out the song prior to recording it when they toured in support of Alanis Morissette in 1996. At that point it had a mellower feeling to it, almost like an acoustic rendition. This performance from august 16th 1996 features several lyrical differences in the verses:

Climbing Up The Walls – Song Trivia

Thom was thinking of the Poll Tax Riots as he wrote this, the scenes where people were breaking down the gates of Downing Street. As well as being political, the song is also about them, travelling around the globe and having to sell their records to people.

Karma Police – Song Trivia

The band tried out the song prior to recording it when they toured in support of Alanis Morissette in 1996, testing different arrangements. The lyrics of the final section (“you know where you are with” etc.) had yet to be written. In this version from the first gig of the tour on august 12th 1996 this passage is simply played without vocals. The instrumentation consists of guitars only for the first third of the song, bass and drums enter somewhere in the middle.
