Radiohead’s Decade-Spanning Secret Album

OK Computer & In RainbowsIn an article written for Cracked.com, the recent OK Computer/In Rainbows mind-melding conspiracy is given a full review, explaining the eerie similarities and simpatico relationship between OK Computer and In Rainbows, and Radiohead’s subtle emphasis on the number 10.

Basically, the theory purports that In rainbows was written as an accompaniment to the previously released OK Computer (10 years earlier). As the theory goes, combine the two records in one playlist (by basically alternating every-other song) and set a 10-second crossfade in between tracks.

A few interesting things to listen for:

  • The Blogger pointed out that the last four beats of “Airbag” set new tempo for “15 Step”
  • The reverb the fades out at the end of “Subterranean Homesick Alien” goes right into “Nude.”

You know it’s been too long since Radiohead has released an album when conspiracy theories about various combinations of their records are going viral. That said, we’re going to make our “Secret Album” playlist and prepare to shit our pants…

  1. I didn’t put the two albums together, so I don’t want to judge if it actually works or not. I do have a few strong points as to why I think this is complete waste of time:

-Every Radiohead album has a completely different vide from each other. They’re incomparable. Of course every album has it’s similarities but overall I think OKC and IR are way too different to even start to compare.

-Although not ‘concept’ albums, I’m sure we can all agree that all RH albums have a ‘journey-like’ feel to them. To combine two of these would be like taking scenes from two different movies from the same director/writer and alternating between scenes, it just wouldn’t work

-The two albums are separated by 10 years and TONS of recording experience, which gives IR a huge improvement on sound quality. If you don’t think it makes a difference, just think of trying to watch a movie (that doesn’t make sense in the first place) with Blu-Ray quality one scene and the next scene in 480p resolution. Not so fun
